Supplies Needed
Markers
Easy Origami Whale
Start with one square piece of Origami Paper.
Make the Diagonal Creas
Fold it in half diagonally, bringing one corner over to meet the opposite corner. Press firmly along the fold to create a sharp crease, and then open the paper back up.
Create a Kite Shape
Open the paper and place it in front of you like a diamond. Bring the right edge inward until it lines up with the center crease. Press the fold flat.
Repeat on the left side, folding the left edge inward to meet the center crease. Your paper should now look like a long kite or diamond.
Shape the Whale’s Body
Fold the top point down until the tip meets the center crease. Press firmly along the fold. This will help shape the front of the whale’s body.
Fold the Whale in Half
Fold the entire paper in half along the center crease, keeping the folded edges tucked inside. Crease the fold firmly so the whale’s body stays closed.
Create the Whale’s Tail
Take the long, thin point at the back of the whale and fold it upward at a right angle. Press firmly to make a sharp crease.
Open the fold slightly, and then reverse it so the tail folds upward neatly between the two sides of the whale’s body.
Separate the Tail Fins
Use scissors to make a small cut down the center of the tail. You can also carefully tear this section if scissors are unavailable, but younger children should have adult help.
Gently fold the two cut sections outward in opposite directions to create the whale’s tail fins.
Add the Whale’s Face
Finish your origami whale by drawing an eye and a friendly smile with a marker. You can also add eyelashes, rosy cheeks, spots, or a little water spout to give your whale even more personality.
Your Origami Whale Is Complete!
