Step 1: Gather Your Supplies
For this Easy Origami Vampire Craft, you’ll need one rectangular piece of paper measuring 4.5 × 8.5 inches (11.4 × 21.6 cm). You’ll also need crayons, markers, or colored pencils to add the vampire’s face and other details after folding. Draw sharp fangs, spooky eyes, slicked-back hair, or a silly expression to give your origami vampire its own Halloween personality!
Step 2: Create the Starter Folds
Begin by folding your paper in half hotdog style and then unfolding it. These first folds create guide lines that will help shape the Vampire later. Take your time and press firmly along each crease with your finger.
Origami works best when the folds are crisp and neat. Encourage kids to slow down and carefully line up the edges before making each fold. A few extra seconds now will make the later steps much easier.
Step 3: Fold the Vampire's Head
Next, create the triangle folds at the top of the paper that will eventually form the Vampire's head. Fold the top corners diagonally, unfold them, and use the crease lines as guides for the next folds.
Flip the paper over. Using the point of the triangle as your guide, fold the top section so the center point is the top of the rectangle.
This part may look tricky at first, but remind kids that origami is like solving a puzzle. Each fold builds on the previous one, and the Vampire will start taking shape very quickly.
Step 4: Make the Triangle Base
Using the crease lines you created, collapse the top section inward to form a large triangle. This folded triangle becomes the Vampire's head and front legs.
Press down firmly along the edges to make sure the folds are solid. Take a moment to admire your progress! At this point, kids can usually begin to see that their paper is transforming into something more than just a rectangle.
Step 5: Fold Triangle
Fold the outer corners of the triangle upward.
Step 6: Shape the Vampire's Body
Now fold the sides of the paper inward toward the center to create a narrower body. This helps form the Vampire's shape.
Step 7: Fold The Cape
Then fold smaller sections of the top outward to shape the cape.
Step 8: Shape the Vampire’s Head
Use scissors to carefully trim and round off the top point of the folded paper. This will create the curved shape of the vampire’s head. Younger children may need adult help with this step.
Step 9: Color and Decorate the Vampire
Use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to decorate your origami vampire. Color the cape black and red, black and purple, or choose any colors you like. Then draw the vampire’s face and hair, adding fun details such as sharp fangs, spooky eyes, a widow’s peak, or a silly Halloween expression!
