Simple Paper Folding Craft! This beautiful paper butterfly is a perfect introduction to the world of origami for kids. With just a piece of paper and a few simple folds, children can transform an ordinary sheet into a colorful butterfly ready to spread its wings.
One of the reasons this origami butterfly craft for kids is so popular is because it's simple enough for beginners while still creating an impressive finished result. Kids love seeing how a flat piece of paper can become something that looks delicate, colorful, and full of life. It's a wonderful way to introduce children to the magic of paper folding.
This easy paper folding activity is perfect for classrooms, homeschool lessons, spring units, insect studies, summer camps, or rainy-day fun at home. It requires very few supplies, making it an affordable craft that's easy to set up and enjoy almost anywhere.

Origami is much more than just a fun craft. As children follow the folding steps, they develop important skills like hand-eye coordination, concentration, patience, and problem-solving. Every fold helps strengthen fine motor skills while teaching kids how to carefully follow directions and create something amazing with their own hands.
One of the best parts about making origami butterflies is the opportunity to customize them. Kids can start with colorful paper or decorate plain paper before folding. Add patterns, designs, spots, stripes, or even glitter to create butterflies that are completely unique. No two butterflies need to look alike!
Once the butterflies are finished, the fun continues. Kids can use them as decorations, create a butterfly garden, hang them from the ceiling, or use them in imaginative play. They also make beautiful additions to greeting cards, bulletin boards, classrooms, and spring displays.

Easy Origami Butterfly Instructions

Step 1: Make the Horizontal and Vertical Creases
Start with a square sheet of paper. Fold it in half to make a rectangle and crease firmly. Unfold, then fold it in half the opposite direction to create another rectangle. Unfold again.

Step 2: Make the Diagonal Creases
Turn the paper over. Fold it in half diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner to make a triangle. Crease it well, then unfold. Repeat with the other two corners so you have an "X" crease across the paper. Your paper should now have several crease lines that will make the next step much easier.

Step 3: Collapse the Paper into a Triangle
Using the crease lines you just made, gently push the two opposite sides inward. The paper will naturally collapse into a large triangle with several layers. Flatten it so the open edges are at the bottom.

Step 4: Round the Wings
Fold the triangle in half along the center crease. Using scissors, carefully round the pointed corners of the folded triangle. This simple cut gives your butterfly beautiful rounded wings.

Open the triangle back up when you're finished.

Step 5: Fold the Wings
Place the triangle so the long edge is at the bottom like a mountain. Fold the top layer on the right side upward so the bottom edge lines up with the center crease. Repeat on the left side. These folds will become the butterfly's top wings.

Step 6: Form the Butterfly
Hold the top point of the triangle and carefully flip the entire piece over while bringing that top point down toward the bottom edge. Without making a sharp crease, bend the point back upward so it extends slightly past the straight edge of the butterfly. Fold the small tip down behind the butterfly to help hold everything together.

Step 7: Finish Your Butterfly
Fold the butterfly gently in half along the center line. Pinch the middle tightly for a few seconds to help the folds stay in place. Carefully spread the wings apart to give your butterfly its beautiful 3D shape.

Helpful Tips
Use a glue stick if needed. If the small flap under the butterfly's head doesn't stay tucked in, add a tiny dab of glue to keep it secure.
Watch the video tutorial. If any of the folds seem tricky, follow along with the step-by-step video. Seeing each fold in action makes the project much easier.
Start with a larger square. Origami butterflies can be folded from any size square paper, but beginners usually find larger paper easier to work with.
