One of my favorite things about handprint crafts is how they capture a moment in time. Those tiny little hands don't stay little forever, and it's so much fun to look back and see just how much they've grown. This Halloween bat is more than just a craft—it's a memory you'll cherish long after the spooky season is over.
This Halloween handprint craft is easy enough for toddlers, preschoolers, and elementary-aged kids, making it perfect for classrooms, daycare centers, homeschool lessons, Halloween parties, or a fun afternoon of crafting at home. Kids will love tracing, coloring, cutting, and assembling their bat while creating something uniquely their own.
As children work through the project, they're strengthening fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, creativity, and scissor skills. From tracing their hands to coloring the bat and carefully assembling the pieces, every step helps build confidence while encouraging artistic expression.

Step 1: Download and Print the Bat Template
Begin by downloading the printable bat template and printing it on an 8.5 × 11-inch sheet of white cardstock paper. Cardstock is sturdier than regular printer paper, which makes the bat easier for kids to color, cut, and assemble without the paper bending or tearing. It will also help the finished bat hold its shape when the handprint wings are added.
Before moving on, make sure the entire bat printed correctly and that none of the outside edges were cut off. Place the printed template on a flat work surface and gather your coloring supplies, scissors, glue stick, ink pads, and gray cardstock.
Step 2: Color the Bat
Invite your child to color the bat’s body using crayons, markers, colored pencils, or acrylic paint pens. They can follow a classic Halloween color palette by using black, gray, and purple, or they can get creative and invent a completely unique bat. Bright blue, orange, green, pink, or even rainbow colors can make the bat extra playful!
Encourage your child to take their time and color all the way to the edges. They can also add their own details, such as spots, stripes, stars, hearts, or a colorful Halloween pattern. There is no wrong way to decorate the bat, so let your child’s personality and imagination shine through.
Step 3: Cut Out the Bat’s Body
Once the coloring is complete, carefully cut around the outside edge of the bat’s body. For younger children who are still learning how to use scissors, remind them to keep their thumb pointing upward and to make slow, small cuts. It is often easier for kids to turn the paper as they cut instead of twisting the scissors around every curve.
Parents can help by trimming away some of the extra paper around the bat first, creating a smaller piece that is easier for little hands to hold. If any sections are too difficult, allow your child to cut the straighter areas while an adult helps with the smaller curves and details. Adult supervision is always recommended when children are using scissors.
Step 4: Make the Handprints
Now it is time to create the bat’s wings! I used fun, child-size handprint ink pads that are made to fit kids’ hands. They make this part of the project quick and easy while capturing all the little lines and details in their palms and fingers.
Gently press your child’s hand onto the ink pad, making sure the palm and each finger are evenly covered. Next, carefully press the hand onto a sheet of gray cardstock. Encourage your child to keep their fingers spread apart so the finished print creates a wide bat-wing shape. Press gently across the back of the hand and each finger before lifting the hand straight up to help prevent smudging.
Repeat the process with the other hand to create two wings. I love using ink because it preserves so many of the tiny details in a child’s handprint and turns the craft into a sweet keepsake. Be sure to wash your child’s hands after making the prints and allow the ink to dry completely before cutting.
If you do not have handprint ink pads, you can simply place your child’s hands on gray cardstock and trace around them with a pencil. You could also use black, purple, or another Halloween-colored cardstock to give the bat a different look.
Step 5: Cut Out the Handprints
Once the handprints are completely dry, carefully cut around the outside of each one. Follow the general shape of the fingers and palm, but do not worry about making every tiny curve perfect. The handprints will still look adorable and recognizable even if the cuts are simple.
Younger children may find the spaces between the fingers challenging to cut. Parents can help with these smaller areas or leave a narrow border around each handprint to make the cutting easier. Just like before, remind kids to make small cuts and rotate the cardstock as they work their way around each hand.
Step 6: Attach the Handprint Wings
Turn the bat’s body over so the back is facing up. Arrange the handprints behind the body with the fingers pointing outward to look like the bat’s wings. Before gluing, move the handprints around until both wings are in a position you like.
Use a glue stick to apply a small amount of glue to the bottom or palm section of each handprint. Press the glued sections onto the back of the bat’s body, making sure the fingers remain visible on both sides. Hold each handprint in place for a few seconds so the glue can begin to stick, and then allow the finished bat to dry.
