Get ready for an eye-catching autumn craft that’s as magical as the changing leaves! Our Printable Fall Agamograph Template is a one-of-a-kind optical illusion art project for kids that brings the beauty of the season to life—right on your wall or fridge. This fun fall activity lets children create a picture that moves as they shift their viewpoint. Agamographs are a fantastic blend of art and STEM learning. Kids not only enjoy crafting and coloring, but they also develop spatial awareness and early engineering skills as they fold and assemble their artwork. This fall agamograph project is perfect for classrooms, homeschool lessons, and cozy craft days at home. Whether you're teaching about the four seasons, planning an autumn art unit, or just looking for a clever paper craft, this project checks all the boxes.

Download & Print the Agamograph Template

To kick off your Agamograph project, first download and print the template. Find directions at the end of this post for purchasing the template.

For best results, I recommend printing the template on 8.5x11 white cardstock. If cardstock isn’t available, regular paper will work too.

Color Your Template

After you've printed the template, it's time to let your creativity shine! Use markers or colored pencils to breathe life into your agamograph. Remember, you are the artist, so let your imagination run wild!

The two images on the template are arranged with segments from each one alternating. To help you navigate while coloring, I’ve labeled them Picture A and Picture B.

Need a coloring trick? If you're struggling with the disconnected lines, scroll down for a helpful hack! It's especially beneficial for younger artists and worth the extra steps.

Scoring the fold lines.

Scoring the Dotted Lines

Precision is key in crafting your agamograph. Younger kids might need adult assistance here. Use a toothpick and a ruler to score the lines before folding.

How to Score Lines:

  1. Position Your Ruler: Lay it along the line where you want to create a fold.

  2. Align the Toothpick: Place it along the edge of the ruler on the line you want to score.

  3. Apply Light Pressure: Gently press down with the toothpick to make a shallow indentation, ensuring you don’t cut through the paper.

  4. Repeat if Needed: Depending on your paper's thickness, you may need to score the same line multiple times for a clean result.

Once you’ve scored the line, you should see a light crease indicating where to fold.

Next, cut out the agamograph along the solid lines. Be precise to ensure that the magic of the agamograph works as intended!

Folding the agamograph.

Fold Along the Dotted Lines

Now comes the fun part! Fold the agamograph along the dotted lines in an accordion style. Ensure the folds are parallel and about an inch apart. Take your time—precision is vital for the illusion to work!

Final Touch: Showcase Your Work

With your agamograph ready, it’s time to unveil the magic. Hold your artwork, gently tilt it back and forth, and watch the images transform! This illusion is sure to amaze everyone.

Another Coloring Trick: If you found the coloring challenging, try cutting along the dotted lines before coloring to keep things organized. Color each piece separately and then glue them back together on a new sheet of paper. This way, everyone can enjoy the complete look while coloring!
