Step 1: Download and Print the Templates
Begin by downloading and printing both pages of the Vampire Moving Eyes Craft template. Print the templates on 8.5 × 11 inch white cardstock paper. Cardstock is sturdier than regular printer paper, helping the finished portrait hold its shape and making the moving-eye illusion work more effectively.
Make sure your printer is set to print at the correct size before getting started. Avoid selecting options that may crop or enlarge the template.
Step 2: Color the Vampire Portrait
Use crayons, markers, colored pencils, or acrylic paint pens to color the vampire and decorative frame. Kids can choose classic vampire colors such as black, red, gray, and purple, or experiment with an entirely different color palette. Encourage them to add their own artistic details and make the vampire portrait completely unique.
As your child colors, remember to keep your comments positive and uplifting. Instead of correcting their color choices, ask questions about their ideas and point out details you enjoy. Step 3: Score the Fold Lines
Before cutting out the box template, score each of the solid black fold lines on the second page. Scoring the lines creates a shallow indent in the cardstock, making it much easier to create straight, precise folds later.
I used a ruler and a toothpick for this step. Place the template on a firm, protected work surface, then carefully line the ruler up with one of the black lines. Apply gentle pressure to the toothpick and run it back and forth along the edge of the ruler to create an indent in the cardstock. Repeat this process on every black fold line.
Be careful not to press so firmly that the toothpick tears or pokes through the paper. Scoring is an extra step, but it makes a big difference—the folds will be cleaner, the box will line up more accurately, and the finished moving-eye illusion will look even better.
Step 4: Cut Out the Templates and Eye Holes
Carefully cut around the outside edges of the vampire portrait and the box template. Take your time around the corners and smaller details so the pieces remain neat and easy to assemble.
Next, carefully remove all four eye openings—two from the vampire portrait and two from the box template. These holes need to line up correctly for the moving-eye effect to work. An adult should help younger children with this part because cutting the small interior openings can be tricky. You can use a small hole punch to create a starter opening before carefully inserting the scissors and cutting around each eye shape.
Step 5: Fold the Box
Fold the box template upward along all the scored black lines. Because the lines were scored earlier, the cardstock should bend neatly and create clean, accurate folds.
Continue folding each section until the template begins to form a box. Press firmly along every crease, making sure the sides line up properly. The vampire’s eyes should be positioned on the inside of the box so they will appear behind the eye holes in the portrait.
Step 6: Glue the Craft Together
Apply glue to the tabs and attach the sides of the box together. Hold each section in place for several seconds so the glue has time to grip. Before continuing, double-check that the printed eyes are facing inward and are visible through the openings in the box.
Finally, glue the vampire portrait to the top of the box. Carefully align the eye holes in the portrait with the eye holes on the box before pressing everything into place. Accurate alignment is important for creating the illusion that the vampire’s eyes are following you. Allow the glue to dry completely, then stand the portrait upright or hang it on the wall and walk from side to side to watch the vampire’s eyes move!
