Turn colorful autumn leaves into magical fairy wings with this Fall Leaf Fairy Craft for Kids – Nature Craft with Real Leaf Wings! This creative fall activity combines a printable fairy template with real leaves collected outside to create one-of-a-kind nature art. Kids can color their fairy, head outdoors to search for the perfect leaves, and then use their fall treasures to give each fairy a beautiful set of wings.
One of my favorite things about this fall nature craft for kids is that the crafting begins before you even sit down at the table. Take a walk through the backyard, neighborhood, park, or schoolyard and let kids hunt for interesting autumn leaves. Look for different shapes, sizes, textures, and colors. Bright yellow, fiery orange, deep red, and even leaves that are still partly green can all make gorgeous fairy wings.
The printable includes three unique fall fairies, so kids can create an entire collection. Each fairy has her own special design, but the real leaves are what make every finished craft completely different. Try long narrow leaves for delicate wings, wide maple leaves for dramatic wings, or combine several smaller leaves to create layers. There really is no wrong way to design them!
Before adding the leaves, grab crayons, markers, or colored pencils and bring the fairies to life. Preparing Your Fall Leaves:
Before you begin your Fall Leaf Fairy Craft, take a few minutes to prepare your leaves so they’re clean, fresh, and easier to work with. Look for colorful fall leaves that are still flexible rather than dry and crunchy, since brittle leaves can crack or crumble while you’re crafting. Gently wipe away any dirt or debris, then place the leaves between a few sheets of paper and press them underneath a heavy book for a short time to help flatten them. You don’t need to completely dry or preserve the leaves—you just want them clean and fairly flat so they’re easier to arrange and glue onto the back of your fairy. Try collecting a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors so kids can experiment with different combinations to create their own beautiful real leaf fairy wings.
Step 1: Print the Fall Leaf Fairy Template
Print the scarecrow template on an 8.5 x 11-inch sheet of white cardstock. Cardstock works best because it makes the finished scarecrow sturdy and durable.
Step 2: Color the Fairies
Before cutting, use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to color your fairies. Choose traditional fall colors like orange, yellow, red, and brown, or get creative and design a scarecrow with a bright, colorful outfit!
Step 3: Cut Out Each Fairy
Carefully cut out each fairy along the outside lines. Younger children who are still learning to use scissors may need help from an adult. Remind kids to make slow, small cuts and turn the paper as they work around the curves and smaller details.
Step 4: Trim the Leaves
Carefully trim the stem from each leaf so it does not stick out from behind the fairy. Cut as close to the base of the leaf as possible without cutting into or damaging the leaf itself. An adult may need to help younger children with this step.
Step 5: Glue the Leaf Wings
Turn the fairy over so the back is facing upward. Apply a small amount of Elmer’s School Glue to the back of the fairy’s torso, then gently press the leaves into the glue. Arrange the leaves so they extend from both sides of the fairy’s body and look like a beautiful pair of wings. Hold them in place for a few seconds, then set the fairy aside and allow the glue to dry completely. Once dry, the colorful fall leaves will become your fairy’s one-of-a-kind wings!
