One of my favorite things about fall nature crafts for kids is that the activity begins before you ever sit down at the craft table. Head outside and hunt for leaves around your backyard, neighborhood, park, or school playground. Look for leaves in fiery reds, golden yellows, bright oranges, warm browns, and even a little green. Different shapes create completely different dragon wings, so encourage kids to collect plenty of possibilities before choosing their favorites.
Before you start crafting, take a few minutes to prepare your leaves. Look for leaves that are still flexible rather than completely dry and crunchy, since brittle leaves can crack while kids are working with them. Gently wipe away any dirt or debris and flatten curled leaves so they’re easier to arrange and glue. You can use freshly collected leaves or preserve your fall leaves first if you want your finished dragon artwork to last longer.

Fall Leaf Dragon Craft for Kids – Easy Autumn Nature Art Project
Before making your Fall Leaf Dragon Craft, you may want to preserve the leaves so they stay colorful and beautiful for longer. Step 1: Print the Fall Leaf Dragon Template
Print the dragon template on an 8.5 x 11-inch sheet of white cardstock. Cardstock gives the dragon a sturdy base and helps support the real fall leaves you’ll add to create its large, colorful wings.
Step 2: Color the Dragon
Before cutting, use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to color the dragon. Try traditional dragon colors such as green, red, orange, or purple, or let kids invent a completely unique color combination. Add patterns, scales, spots, stripes, shading, or other imaginative details to give the dragon its own magical personality!
Step 3: Cut Out the Dragon
Carefully cut out the dragon’s body along the outside lines. Encourage kids to use slow, small cuts and turn the paper as they work around the curves and smaller details. Younger children who are still learning to use scissors may need help from an adult.
Step 4: Glue on the Leaf Wings
Turn the dragon over so its back is facing upward. Apply a small amount of Elmer’s School Glue to the back of the dragon’s torso, then gently press the leaves into the glue. Arrange one leaf on each side of the body to create a large pair of dragon wings. Hold the leaves in place for a few seconds, then set the dragon aside until the glue dries completely. Once dry, the colorful fall leaves will become your dragon’s one-of-a-kind wings!
