Coffee Filter Chick Craft for Kids

Step 1: Download & Print
Start by downloading the Coffee Filter Chick Template and printing it on 8.5x11 white cardstock paper. Cardstock works best for this project because it’s sturdy and holds up well when attaching the coffee filter wings.
If you need help accessing the template, download instructions can be found at the bottom of this post. Once printed, gather your supplies and get ready for a fun, colorful Easter craft!

Step 2: Color the Chicks
Now it’s time to bring your chicks to life! Use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to color in the chick template. Encourage kids to get creative—maybe their chick is bright yellow, soft pastel, or even rainbow-colored!
This is also a great opportunity to build confidence through encouragement. Try using positive, specific compliments like: “I love how bright your colors are!”, “You worked so carefully on that!”, or “That is such a creative design!” Focusing on effort and creativity helps kids feel proud of their work and excited to keep creating.

Step 3: Cut Out the Chick
Carefully cut out the chick along the outer edges. Encourage kids to go slowly and follow the lines as best they can.
✂️ Scissor Safety Tips for Kids: Always sit while cutting, keep fingers away from the blades, and hold the paper steady with the non-cutting hand. Remind kids to take their time—there’s no rush! Younger children may need a little help, and that’s perfectly okay. This step is great practice for building fine motor skills.

Step 4: Color the Coffee Filters
Next, grab your coffee filters and color them using washable markers. This part is important—make sure the markers are washable, or the colors won’t spread in the next step.
Kids can scribble, draw patterns, or fill the entire filter with color. There’s no wrong way to do it! The more color you add, the more vibrant the final result will be.

Step 5: Spray the Coffee Filters with Water
Place the colored coffee filters on a protected surface and lightly spray them with water. Because you used washable markers, the water will cause the colors to spread and blend together, creating a beautiful tie-dye effect.
Be sure to put paper towels, a tray, or newspaper underneath to catch any extra color and prevent mess. Watching the colors bleed and mix is always a favorite moment for kids—it feels like magic!
Step 6: Let Them Dry
Carefully move the wet coffee filters to a safe place to dry. I like to lay them flat on top of paper towels to absorb extra moisture and speed up the drying process.
Allow the filters to dry completely before moving on. This step is important so the colors stay vibrant and the filters are easy to handle when assembling the chick.
Step 7: Attach the Wings
Once the coffee filters are dry, gather each filter in the center and gently twist the middle to create a wing shape. Fluff out the edges so they look soft and full like feathers.
Flip your chick over and tape the twisted center of the coffee filter to the back. Adjust and fluff the wings until they look just right.

Now your chick has bright, colorful wings and is ready to show off!
