Getting ready for a brand-new school year is always exciting, and what better way to celebrate the first day back than with a fun and creative activity? This Back to School Agamograph Craft – Printable Optical Illusion for Kids is the perfect blend of art and education. With just a few folds and some coloring, kids can transform a simple printable template into a moving piece of art that shifts between two images: the words “Back to” on one side, and on the other, a colorful stack of books with an apple on top, complete with a curious little bookworm poking out. At the bottom, the word “School” completes the phrase in a clever and interactive way.
An agamograph craft is a unique optical illusion project where two images are combined into one folded artwork. When you look at the craft from one angle, you’ll see the first image, and from another, the second image appears. This printable version makes it incredibly easy for parents, teachers, and kids to dive into the magic of agamographs without needing any fancy supplies. All you need is the template, scissors, crayons or markers, and a bit of folding, and your kids will be amazed at how their artwork comes to life.
This back-to-school craft is not only fun, but also educational. It reinforces early literacy with the words “Back to School” while celebrating symbols of learning like books, apples, and bookworms. Children will practice fine motor skills as they cut, fold, and color, all while enjoying the anticipation of the school year ahead. Teachers can even use this project as a creative icebreaker activity for the first day of class, allowing students to share their excitement about learning in a hands-on way.
Parents love that this printable is low-prep, affordable, and instantly engaging. Simply download the Back to School Agamograph printable, print it on regular paper or cardstock, and watch your kids’ creativity shine. This project works beautifully at home as a family craft night activity, or in classrooms as a back-to-school art station. Best of all, once complete, the agamograph makes a cheerful decoration for desks, refrigerators, or bulletin boards.

The charming illustrations in this craft are designed with kids in mind. The first panel features a bold, simple “Back to” text, easy for kids to color and decorate. The second panel bursts with personality—a tall stack of books, a bright red apple, and a playful little bookworm peeking out, a classic back-to-school symbol kids will recognize and love. When folded together, the optical illusion effect transforms these two panels into one magical piece of artwork that says “Back to School” in a whole new way.
This activity is also a great opportunity to talk with kids about their goals, hopes, and excitement for the year ahead. As they work on their agamograph, you can ask them what they’re most looking forward to—making new friends, reading exciting books, or learning new subjects. Crafts like this provide a creative and stress-free way to ease into the back-to-school transition while still emphasizing the joy of learning.
If you’re building a collection of back-to-school crafts for kids, this agamograph pairs perfectly with other fun activities from Artsy Kids Zone, like the Back-to-School Agamograph, paper bag puppets, DIY bookmarks, and seasonal agamographs for fall. Preparing for the Fall Agamograph Craft

Download & Print the Agamograph Template
To kick off your Agamograph project, first download and print the template. Find directions at the end of this post for purchasing the template.
For best results, I recommend printing the template on 8.5x11 white cardstock. If cardstock isn’t available, regular paper will work too.

Color Your Template
After you've printed the template, it's time to let your creativity shine! Use markers or colored pencils to breathe life into your agamograph. Remember, you are the artist, so let your imagination run wild!
The two images on the template are arranged with segments from each one alternating. To help you navigate while coloring, I’ve labeled them Picture A and Picture B.
Need a coloring trick? If you're struggling with the disconnected lines, scroll down for a helpful hack! It's especially beneficial for younger artists and worth the extra steps.

Scoring the Dotted Lines
Precision is key in crafting your agamograph. Younger kids might need adult assistance here. Use a toothpick and a ruler to score the lines before folding.
How to Score Lines:
Position Your Ruler: Lay it along the line where you want to create a fold.
Align the Toothpick: Place it along the edge of the ruler on the line you want to score.
Apply Light Pressure: Gently press down with the toothpick to make a shallow indentation, ensuring you don’t cut through the paper.
Repeat if Needed: Depending on your paper's thickness, you may need to score the same line multiple times for a clean result.
Once you’ve scored the line, you should see a light crease indicating where to fold.

Cut Out the Template
Next, cut out the agamograph along the solid lines. Be precise to ensure that the magic of the agamograph works as intended!

Fold Along the Dotted Lines
Now comes the fun part! Fold the agamograph along the dotted lines in an accordion style. Ensure the folds are parallel and about an inch apart. Take your time—precision is vital for the illusion to work!

Final Touch: Showcase Your Work
With your agamograph ready, it’s time to unveil the magic. Hold your artwork, gently tilt it back and forth, and watch the images transform! This illusion is sure to amaze everyone.
Another Coloring Trick: If you found the coloring challenging, try cutting along the dotted lines before coloring to keep things organized. Color each piece separately and then glue them back together on a new sheet of paper. This way, everyone can enjoy the complete look while coloring!
