One of my favorite things about these printable Christmas ornaments is how easy they are to make! Simply download and print the ornament templates, let kids color their favorite Christmas characters, carefully cut them out, and add a ribbon or string to hang them on the Christmas tree. Kids can get creative with colorful markers, crayons, or colored pencils to give Santa, the elves, and Rudolph their own unique personalities. These color-your-own Christmas ornaments are also a wonderful way to encourage creativity and practice fine motor skills while making something special to display throughout the holidays.

Printable Christmas Paper Ornaments for Kids:
Santa, Elves & Rudolph

Step 1: Download and Print
Begin by downloading the Printable Christmas Paper Ornaments Template. For best results, print the template on 8.5 x 11-inch white cardstock. Cardstock is sturdier than regular printer paper, helping the finished ornaments hold their shape when displayed on your Christmas tree.

Step 2: Color the Christmas Paper Ornaments
Use colored pencils to decorate the Christmas paper ornaments. Colored pencils work especially well because their fine tips make it easier to color the small details, but crayons, markers, or acrylic paint pens will also work. Kids can choose traditional Christmas colors or create their own imaginative color combinations.
As children work, build their confidence by giving specific, positive compliments. Try saying, “I love the colors you chose for Santa’s hat,” or “The pattern you added to the elf’s clothing is so creative!” Focus on their ideas and effort rather than coloring perfectly inside the lines. This helps kids feel proud of their artwork and encourages them to keep creating.

Step 3: Cut Out the Ornaments
Carefully cut around the outside edge of each paper ornament. Remind children to sit while cutting, keep their fingers away from the blades, and point the scissors away from their bodies. Encourage them to make slow, small cuts and turn the paper as they follow the curved lines. Younger children may need help from an adult.
If your child needs more scissor practice, try our free Santa’s Beard Cutting Templates. They include straight, zigzag, and curved lines that help children practice following different cutting paths while strengthening their fine motor skills.

Step 4: Attach the Ribbon
Cut a piece of ribbon approximately 7–9 inches long and fold it in half to create a hanging loop. Turn the ornament over and attach the two cut ends of the ribbon to the back. I used a hot glue gun to secure the ribbon so it would stay firmly in place. Because hot glue and the metal tip of the glue gun can cause burns, this part must be completed by an adult. Allow the glue to cool completely before handling or hanging the ornament.

Hang Santa, Rudolph, and the elves on your Christmas tree, decorate a classroom, attach them to wrapped gifts, or give them to family and friends. FAQ
Does regular paper work instead of cardstock?
Yes, you can print the Christmas paper ornaments on regular printer paper. However, cardstock is sturdier and helps the ornaments hold their shape when hanging. If you use regular paper, you can glue the finished ornament onto cardstock or thin cardboard for extra support.
Do I have to use a hot glue gun?
No! You can use a hole punch to make a hole near the top of the ornament, then thread a ribbon through it and tie the ends together. If you do use a hot glue gun to attach the ribbon to the back, an adult should handle this step.
Do I have to use ribbon?
No, string or yarn works too! Cut a piece about 7–9 inches long to make a loop for hanging your ornament.
What can kids use to color the ornaments?
Kids can use colored pencils, markers, crayons, or any other favorite coloring supplies. Colored pencils are especially helpful for filling in the smaller details, but anything works!
Where can we display the finished ornaments?
Hang them on your Christmas tree, decorate a garland, or attach them to wrapped gifts for a personal touch. They also make sweet handmade gifts for grandparents, teachers, and friends.
