Looking for the perfect way to combine warm weather, outdoor fun, and creativity? Say hello to Water Gun Painting! This playful art activity is the ultimate summer craft for kids of all ages. When the sun is shining and the kids are bursting with energy, there’s nothing better than handing them a squirt gun — filled with paint!
Water Gun Painting is exactly what it sounds like — instead of water, kids fill their water guns with vibrant, washable paint. Then, they get to blast their colors onto a blank canvas or large sheet of paper. It’s messy, unpredictable, and totally awesome! Trust us, the giggles and squeals of delight are guaranteed.
One of the best parts about this outdoor art project is that no two paintings will ever be the same. Each blast of color creates unique splatters and patterns, so every child’s masterpiece is truly one-of-a-kind. It’s the perfect blend of art and play that keeps kids engaged for hours.
And don’t worry — setup is simple and easy to clean up. All you need are a few squirt guns, some washable paint, and large sheets of paper taped to a fence, easel, or even laid out on the lawn. This is one summer craft that’s totally stress-free for parents too!

Water Painting is also a wonderful way to get kids moving and thinking creatively. They’ll experiment with mixing colors, layering splatters, and aiming their shots from different angles. It’s an open-ended activity that lets their imagination run wild while they stay active outdoors.
Want to make it extra special? Turn it into a backyard “art party!” Invite a few friends over, set up multiple painting stations, and let the kids swap colors and canvases. When they’re done, hang the finished artwork up to dry — you’ll have an instant outdoor gallery bursting with color and personality.
This craft is perfect for summer birthdays, family BBQs, or any sunny afternoon when you need an exciting boredom buster. Plus, parents love that this activity gets kids away from screens and out into the fresh air while sparking their inner artist.
So grab those squirt guns and get ready for a splash of colorful creativity! Water Gun Painting is sure to become one of your family’s favorite summer traditions — the only question is: who will make the coolest masterpiece this time?

🎨 Materials You’ll Need:
Tempera paint (washable and non-toxic)
Water
Water guns (one for each color is extra fun!)
Canvas, poster board, or large sheets of thick paper
Plastic cups or squeeze bottles for mixing paint
Old clothes or paint smocks (things can get messy!)
Painter’s tape (optional, for securing paper)
Drop cloth or tarp (optional, to protect grass or fences)
Step-by-Step Directions to Water Gun Painting:
Step 1: Prep Your Paint
In plastic cups or squeeze bottles, mix your tempera paint with a bit of water until it’s thin enough to squirt easily through the water gun. Each brand of paint is a little different, but a 50/50 ratio of paint to water is usually a good starting point. You’re aiming for a milk-like consistency — not too thick, not too runny! If the water gun is struggling to get the paint out, just add a little more water until it flows smoothly. Be careful not to add too much water though, or your colors might look too light and washed out.
Step 2: Load the Squirt Guns
Carefully pour each color into its own water gun. Kids love having one gun per color so they can switch up their designs and create bold, layered masterpieces. Make sure the caps are sealed tight so there are no leaks or surprise splashes! I even like to take a permanent marker and write what color is in each gun — it makes it easy for kids to grab the right shade without any mix-ups.

Step 3: Set Up Your Canvas
Set up your canvas or poster board outside. Tape them to a fence, easel, or lay them flat on the ground with a drop cloth underneath. The bigger the canvas, the bigger the blast zone for your little artists!
Step 4: Let the Fun Begin!
Hand over the squirt guns and let your kids go wild! Encourage them to try spraying from different angles and distances. Watch as they layer colors and create amazing splatter effects — no two paintings will ever be the same!

Step 5: Let It Dry
When your artists are done, set the artwork aside to dry. You can clip them to a clothesline, lean them against the fence, or just leave them flat in the sun. Once dry, display their masterpieces for everyone to admire!
Bonus Tips:
Use washable paint for easy cleanup.
Keep a bucket of water nearby to rinse out the squirt guns when you’re done.
Old clothes or paint smocks are a must — splatter happens!
Squirt Gun Painting is messy, colorful, and absolutely unforgettable — the perfect summer craft to make memories that will last all season long!
