Family vacations create some of the best childhood memories, and this Travel Mini Book for Kids – Printable Vacation Journal Activity is the perfect way to help kids remember every exciting adventure! Whether you're heading to a national park, the beach, a big city, or a weekend getaway, this printable mini book encourages children to slow down, reflect on their experiences, and create a keepsake they'll treasure for years to come.
The inspiration for this printable came from a recent family trip to West Yellowstone. Before we left, I wanted my kids to have a fun way to document everything they saw and experienced. Instead of simply taking photos, I created this travel mini book so they could draw pictures, answer questions, and write about their favorite memories from the trip. It ended up becoming one of our favorite vacation activities!
Watching my kids fill out their books throughout our adventure was so much fun. They loved recording the animals they spotted, their favorite stops, the funniest moments, and all the little details that make a family vacation so special. Every child noticed something different, and it was wonderful to see the trip through their eyes.

One of my favorite parts came after we returned home. As we flipped through their completed books together, we laughed about funny moments, remembered places we had already forgotten, and relived the adventure all over again. This simple printable became much more than an activity—it became a treasured family keepsake that captures our vacation through the eyes of our children.
This printable vacation journal for kids is made from just one sheet of paper, folded into an interactive mini book. Inside are prompts that encourage kids to draw, write, and reflect on their travels. It's an easy, screen-free activity that keeps children engaged during road trips, hotel stays, campground evenings, or quiet moments after a busy day of exploring.
Not only is this travel journal activity for kids fun, but it's also educational. It encourages writing, storytelling, observation, and creativity while helping children practice recalling details and organizing their thoughts. Best of all, every finished book is completely unique because every family vacation is different.

If your family enjoys these one-page mini books, be sure to check out our other favorites on the blog! The All About My Mom Mini Book and All About My Dad Mini Book are wonderful keepsake crafts that let kids answer fun prompts, color the pages, and create heartfelt gifts for Mother's Day and Father's Day. Just like this travel journal, they're made from a single sheet of paper and become cherished memories that families will enjoy for years.
Another activity my family absolutely loved on our road trip was playing the License Plate Game. Instead of competing against each other, we worked together as a team to see how many different state license plates we could find along the way. It turned every rest stop, gas station, and stretch of highway into a fun scavenger hunt. By the end of our trip, we had found every state except one! The kids were so excited each time we spotted a new plate, and it kept everyone looking out the windows and engaged with the journey instead of staring at screens.
If you're planning a family road trip, I highly recommend trying the online License Plate Game that requires no sign-up. It's easy to use, tracks the states you've found, and adds an extra layer of excitement to your travels. It's a simple, screen-light activity that encourages observation, teamwork, and conversation while helping create fun family memories you'll talk about long after the trip is over.
Whether you're planning a cross-country road trip, visiting a national park, flying to a dream destination, or simply taking a weekend getaway, this Travel Mini Book for Kids is the perfect companion. It turns everyday vacation moments into lasting memories and gives children a special way to document the adventures they'll remember long after the suitcases have been unpacked. Happy travels—and happy memory making!

Step 1: Print Your Template
Start by printing the Travel Mini Book template on 8.5x11 white paper. Regular printer paper works perfectly for this project since it folds easily and creates clean creases for the book.

Step 2: Color and Fill Out the Prompts
Now comes the most fun and meaningful part—coloring and filling out the pages! Let kids use crayons, markers, or colored pencils to decorate each section of the book. Then, help them answer the prompts about their trip.

Step 3: Fold Your Mini Book
Now it’s time to turn your paper into a mini flip book! Follow these steps carefully:
Start by folding the paper in half the “hamburger” way (short side to short side).

Then fold it in half again to create a long, skinny shape divided into four sections.

Open that last fold so the paper is back to a single fold in half. Next, fold the paper in half the opposite direction (long side to long side).

Using scissors, make a cut along the folded edge—cut from the fold toward the center crease, stopping at the middle.

Now open the paper back up, then fold it lengthwise again.

Gently push the ends inward so the center cut opens up, and begin folding the sections in an accordion style to form your mini book.

Adjust the folds so all the pages line up neatly.
Here is a video of how to assemble the mini book.
