Komodo dragons are the largest lizards in the world. An adult can grow to be about 10 feet long and weigh over 150 pounds—that's longer than many family cars are wide! Even though they're enormous, they can move surprisingly fast when they need to, making them one of the most impressive reptiles on Earth.
These incredible reptiles are found naturally on only a handful of islands in Indonesia, including Komodo Island, which is where they get their name. They enjoy warm, dry environments and spend much of their time exploring forests, grasslands, and beaches in search of food.
Komodo dragons have an amazing sense of smell. They constantly flick their long, forked tongues in and out to collect tiny scent particles from the air. This helps them locate food from several miles away—almost like having a superpower! Kids are often amazed to learn that a dragon's tongue is one of its most important hunting tools.
Although they may look fierce, Komodo dragons play an important role in keeping nature balanced in the places where they live. They are fascinating animals to study because they show just how unique and diverse reptiles can be. Learning about wildlife like Komodo dragons also helps children appreciate the importance of protecting animals and their habitats.
