Growing up, Thanksgiving wasn’t complete without the homemade pies my grandmother and mom would bake. I didn’t even taste a store-bought pie until I was an adult, and once I did, I quickly realized they could never match the warmth and flavor of a homemade pie. Now that I'm the one baking for my family, it feels meaningful to continue this tradition, especially when my kids eagerly join me in the kitchen. Sure, their help means a little extra flour on the floor and an occasional egg mishap, but their excitement and involvement make every baking session even sweeter.

Sharing this experience with them has become one of my favorite parts of the holiday season, and passing down this family tradition is truly special. It’s not just about teaching them the recipe but sharing memories, laughs, and little stories as we go. That connection to my own childhood and the joy on their faces when they proudly help with “their” pie brings everything full circle.

This family tradition inspired me even more to create this drawing video with my daughter. It’s an extension of those pie-baking sessions, a way to capture and share the love and creativity that comes with Thanksgiving. Watching her imagination bring this project to life felt like a continuation of the joy I experienced baking with my family. It's amazing to think that these simple moments may become traditions for her to cherish too.

Working on this drawing together was just as enjoyable as our kitchen adventures. It was a chance to slow down, be creative, and, just like when we bake, embrace the messiness of the process! Whether we're adding too much paint or too much flour, I wouldn’t trade these moments for anything. Just like baking, this drawing project gave us a chance to make memories and celebrate a special tradition in a new way.

I'm so grateful to carry forward these small yet meaningful family traditions that bring us closer. I hope sharing this project inspires you and your kids to create, bake, and make memories together, building your own traditions in the process. After all, it's not just about the pie (or the drawing)—it’s about the time spent together.

You can download a handy document that includes each of the drawing steps outlined, making it easy to follow along. At the bottom of the page, there’s a special section where your young artist can practice drawing their own apple pie. This space allows kids to take what they've learned from the step-by-step instructions and apply it themselves, helping them gain confidence and creativity. It’s a great way for children to learn how to draw while adding their own personal touches.

Print it out on 8.5x11 paper, and your little one will be ready to create their own pie masterpiece! You will find directions on how to download the document or template at the bottom of this post.

How To Draw An Apple Pie

Step 1: Start by drawing the pie tin at the bottom of your page. Begin with a horizontal line to form the base of the tin. At each end, draw two straight lines that angle outward to create the sides of the tin, giving it that dish-like shape.

Step 2: Draw a scalloped line along the top edge of the pie tin. This will represent the crimped edges of the pie crust.

Step 3: For the top of the pie, draw a curved dome shape above the pie tin to create the classic, rounded pie top. Inside this dome, add three small teardrop shapes for the vents, to make it look like the pie has been freshly baked and is filled with apples.

Step 4: Add eyes to the pie tin. Start by drawing one large circle, and inside, add two smaller circles for highlights. Optional: Add a few small lines on the outer edge of each eye to give it eyelashes for an extra touch of character. Repeat to draw a second eye.

Step 5: Fill in the larger circles black, leaving the smaller circles white to create a bright, friendly expression. Between the eyes, draw a small mouth to make the pie look happy and inviting.

Step 6: Draw three wavy lines above the pie to represent steam, giving the impression that it’s fresh out of the oven and hot!

Now your apple pie drawing is complete and ready to color in! Enjoy adding your creative touches and bringing your tasty-looking pie to life!
