Completed Harry Potter Homemade Wands

Mr. Ollivander said in the first book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone that "The wand chooses the wizard, Mr. Potter. It's not always clearly why. But I think it is clear that we can expect great things from you."

Two of my daughters are born in the same month (different years) and last year they decided to have a joint birthday party that was Harry Potter themed. I have to tell you that this was a dream come true for me! At the time we were reading the series together and it was so fun for me to watch them fall in love with the magical world of Harry Potter.

One of the activities that I chose to do at the birthday party was pretend to be Mr. Ollivander and match kids to a wand. I purchased remote controlled candles and had each kid come up. I handed them a wand and had them cast the light spell "Lumos."

My husband was in the back of the room with the remote. He would randomly choose to press the on button or not. If the candles lit up, the child kept that wand. If the candle did not light up, I would then give them a different wand and have them say the spell again.

This activity was magical! It really made the kids feel like they were in the wizarding world. Up this point the wands were partially made. I had already shaped the wands and allowed for the clay to dry, but they still needed to be painted. Once each child had their wand, we then had the kids paint their wands and customize them.

Materials Needed:

  • DAS Air Hardening Modeling Clay

  • 12" Wooden Dowel Craft Sticks (3/16 or 1/4 Inch Thick)

  • Paint (Two different shades of brown & Gold Metallic)

  • Paint Brush

  • Sponge

  • Sandpaper

Optional Materials:

  • Plastic Knife

  • Toothpicks

How to apply clay to Harry Potter Homemade Wands.

Step 1: Mold the Wand

Start by molding the DAS Air Hardening Modeling Clay around a third of the wooden dowel to serve as the handle of your wand. Air pockets can form between the wooden dowel and the clay, so ensure to squeeze out any air by pressing the clay firmly. Assistance may be required for this step. Once attached, shape the clay to your desired thickness and length, considering the ergonomic feel for comfortable use.

Step 2: Add Texture

Utilize a plastic knife or toothpick to imprint textures onto the clay's surface. Experiment with different patterns to achieve a weathered and mystical appearance reminiscent of wands from the wizarding world.

Another option to shape your wand is to create a handprint. I did this by squeezing the clay in my hand. This created a lot of texture and turned out to be really cute.

Be creative and remember there is no wrong way to add texture. Experiment until you find what works for you.

Step 3: Let It Dry

Allow the clay to air-dry completely, which may take a day or two depending on the wand's thickness. Ensure thorough drying before moving on to the next steps.

Step 4: Sand and Refine

After drying, use sandpaper to smooth out any rough spots or imperfections. This step is crucial for achieving a professional finish.

Step 5: Paint Your Masterpiece

Using a paintbrush, apply a layer of dark paint to the entire wand and allow it to dry. Next, use a sponge to dab the wand with a lighter color, creating a textured appearance. Once dried, sparingly use gold metallic paint to add highlights and bring your wand to life.

Optional Step: Seal the Magic

Consider applying a clear sealant or varnish to protect your wand and enhance its appearance. This adds a subtle sheen and makes your wand more resilient.
